Location Unit 57, Honeyborough Business Park, Neyland, Pembrokeshire SA73 1SE.
History The centre was started with a small group of people with MS, discussing the possible benefits, of the then, new form of treatment called “Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy”.
This was followed soon after with the formation of H.O.P.E, (the acronym stands for “Hyperbaric Oxygen Pembrokeshire Endeavour”), as a locally registered charity.
After some two years spent raising the necessary funds, the centre started operations on the 6th January 1986 and HBO therapy was at last available to Pembrokeshire people with M.S. Over the years, we have received very generous funding from people in all walks of life, from major companies, businesses, retail groups, other charitable organisations, local people and visitors to the area, children and a real “lifeline” of monies from Collection Boxes throughout Pembrokeshire.
Without this continued revenue stream we would cease to exist as we are today.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment (HDOT) This is a well-known treatment, now known as High Dosage Oxygen Therapy (HDOT), not only for people with MS but also for other injuries, where an increase in the percentage of oxygen in the blood stream, has a tendency to speed up the natural process of healing.
The treatment in simple terms, is the breathing of pure medical oxygen, whilst in an environment of increased air pressure, this is normally at a pressure equivalent to being 33 feet below sea level.
The “environment” at H.O.P.E, is a spherical steel tank that provides seating and oxygen supply for up to four people. The normal period of treatment lasts for 1 hour with a short break at half time, if required by the users.
The staff that control and operate the therapy sessions are fully trained in all aspects of Health & Safety concerning its usage and operation.
At the moment about 700 people are receiving HDOT Therapy annually.
Our present aim is to extend our treatments to include sports injuries, diabetic ulceration, children with cerebral palsy and many other conditions that HDOT can help to alleviate.
Physiotherapy We employ a Chartered Physiotherapist and two Assistants within the department.
They are responsible for carrying out assessment, and then follow an agreed treatment plan over a continously monitored time period.
We have a spacious treatment area, which is now quite well equipped with both donated items and items purchased through our fund-raising and from local businesses.
With more Physiotherapy sessions taking place, the Centre has more people attending thanever before. THe department has the same opening hours as the Centre.
All three therapy areas have disabled toilets and the entire Centre is centrally heated.
