ANTI – DVT AIRBAGS.
Just a handbag-sized air cushion, but it could mean the difference between a healthy flight and developing the deadly DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis).
Passengers can put the AIROGYM beneath their feet enabling them to exercise as they fly by ‘walking’ on it, pumping air to and fro between two compartments.
The cushion has been invented by a retired British Airways pilot, who once had a person taken ill with DVT.
It is believed to affect 30,000 air travellers each year, and about 2,000 are thought to die annually in Britain from the causes of DVT.
Blood stagnating in the legs of people seated for long periods can form clots, and the danger occurs when the clots travel to the lungs.
Scientific tests carried out in the UK, testing the £7.99 Airogym has proved that by making use of it in flight, improves circulation by working the calf muscles, and improves blood flow by between 25 and 50 per cent. The increased blood flow certainly prohibits stagnation of blood flow in the veins and in turn should reduce the risk of development of potentially fatal blood clots.
