Milford Haven Town Band was founded in 1974 and the membership, standard and reputation of the band have steadily increased ever since, attracting players throughout the Pembrokeshire area. Two of the band’s founder members are still present today. We always welcome new players, of all ages, to work through our “Junior Band” to develop quality players for the main band. The ages of the “Junior Band” currently range from 6 to 64 – it’s never too late to start learning!
Milford Haven Town Band is self supporting, its main income is obtained from concerts and carnival performances at various events throughout Pembrokeshire. Altogether we play at approximately 45 events annually including local carnivals, civic parades, Christmas concerts, Remembrance Services and most recently ballroom/sequence dances. We take time to support numerous local charities including Breakthrough Breast Care, RNLI, Noah’s Ark Appeal, and Paul Satori Foundation. In 2003 our chosen charities are Sandy Bears (grief counselling for children) and the local branch of the Cot Deaths Society.
The band has forged many friends outside the U.K. over the past 10 years, culminating in twinning visits with Romille-Sur-Seine, France; Milford, New Hampshire, U.S.A; and the HFC Brass Band in New Ross, Wexford, Eire. Our most recent trip was in August 2002 when we visited the HFC Brass Band and performed two concerts in 3 days to an overwhelmed audience. In addition to this we performed a concert as a massed band with over 80 players. The retirement of one Musical Director in 2001 required the appointment of another. Martyn Llewellyn was an obvious choice, a talented musician and member of the band since 1993. He previously performed with the Haverfordwest Town and County Band, under the directorship of the late great Joffre Swales, also with the Tongwynlais Silver Band, Cardiff where he played trombone in the championship section. Martyn’s ability to compose and arrange music has really struck the “right cord” with the band, many of which you will hear within our programmes. We look forward to his enthusiasm, dedication, talent and love of music continuing to inspire us, taking us from strength to strength.
While we take the music seriously, we play for fun and we believe this is reflected in the entertainment value of the concerts we perform.
