Tangalle is a small fishing town on the south coast of Sri Lanka. Its main industries are fishing and tourism. In recent years people have been attracted in increasing numbers to its beautiful beaches, glorious food and friendly people.
The tsunami created by the earthquake on Boxing Day 2004 caused massive destruction. Nearly all boats in the harbour and bay were destroyed, much of the town was devastated and all tourist accommodation on the beaches to the east of town was swept away or damaged beyond repair.
START has been formed to develop long-term links between the communities of Tenby, Pembrokeshire, and Tangalle to help the people of Tangalle and surrounding villages. START will raise money for projects which will directly help the people to rebuild their lives.
