February 2004 is an important date in world history, with the 200th anniversary of the very first journey by a steam locomotive hauling a load on rails.
This took place in Merthyr Tydfil on the 21st February 1804.
The journey happened due to a combination of events - the genius of Richard Trevithick, a steam engineer from Cornwall, the vision of Samuel Homfray, the Penydarren Iron master, and the daring of local spectators who were so excited by the event that they climbed on board to become the first steam railway passengers.
Very comprehensivee celebrations of the Anniversary of this remarkable event, are taking place throughout 2004, in and around the very place that this historic event took place, suffice to say that considerable work and effort has already been carried out by many organisations in and around Merthyr Tydfil, providing excellent publications of the forthcoming celebaratory events.
May I refer readers to the quotation "I WILL COMES BEFORE IQ" - where these are combined, you have GENIUS - namely, RICHARD TREVITHICK.
"If" is very often the largest word in the English language, and "If" it was not for Richard Trevithick, Merthyr's very own Owen Money would not have been able to relate his tale of the Sunday School trip to Barry Island, where the train was so long, he was only able get on the back when the front had reached Barry Island.
Events associated with the celebrations can be followed by viewing the publication listed below, kindly supplied courtesy of Emma Hamilton, Merthyr Tydfil Borough Council Arts, Culture and Tourism Section.
Further information is available on the Web-Site - www.trevithick2004.co.uk
Visitors and locals alike may also like to enjoy typical Merthyr hospitality by being wined and dined, (or fed and watered) at a number of excellent restaurants throughout the Borough, accommodation costs a little extra - simply view "Accommodation & Restaurants".
For Steam Engine enthusiasts, it should be remembered that all journeys started from Merthyr Tydfil, with Richard Trevithick's invention 200 years ago.
Those wishing to view the advent of steam engines throughout the world, links to Web-Sites of steam engines from Russia to Vietnam, India to U.S.A are quoted below, not forgetting how steam engines have also contributed to Country and Western Music associated with steam.
Please enjoy the celebrations taking place throughout the next twelve months or so, and enjoy once again the "Age and Romance of Steam"
